Kannur international airport is the second greenfield airport to be built on a public private partnership (PPP) platform in Kerala. The airport is managed by Kannur International Airport Ltd.(KIAL), a public company. The principle investor in KIAL, the Government of Kerala, owns 32.86% of the company’s shares.

The airport will have an integrated passenger terminal for both international and domestic travelers with a floor area of 97,000 m2(1,040,000 sq. ft.) for arrival and departure separately. It will be able to handle up to 2,000 passengers during peak hours with its unique swing facility. It features six aerobridges with 48 check-in counters, 32 emigration counters, 16 customs counters, four conveyor belts and access control inside the terminal.

Flight tickets on the maiden Air India Express flight from the soon-to-be-launched Kannur International Airport in the South Indian state of Kerala to Abu Dhabi has almost sold out.
Air India Express ,On December 9, the inaugural flight from Kannur International Airport (KIAL) in northern Kerala will take off for Abu Dhabi at 10 am, minutes after the airport’s inauguration by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, top airport officials confirmed. The maiden Kannur-Abu Dhabi flight will be operated by Air India Express.
Jet Airways discontinues Dubai–Mangaluru direct flight from Dec 5?
Jet Airways will discontinue its daily direct flight service in Dubai – Mangaluru route from the first week of December, say some reports.
It is not yet confirmed if the opening of Kannur airport from December 9 is the reason to cancel the Mangaluru-Dubai route or the recent developments in Jet Airways which is facing tougher economic conditions.
Real Impact To Travelers
The second half of December is normally a busy schedule for all airlines, and every year flights are fully- booked from Middle East region on account of Christmas holidays. Many passengers plan their travel at least 3-6 months in advance. If cancellation news is true, then it is going to affect several passengers.
Airlines like Air India Express and SpiceJet that are operating daily from Dubai are expected to raise their ticket price during December, duly taking advantage of cancellation of Jet Airways.
Conclusion
Kannur airport is about 95 kms from from Madikeri city, with a journey of nearly 2 and half hours. Meanwhile all other airports are bit far away from the madikeri city. The second nearest airport is Mangalore international airport with a distance of 150 kms. so people of coorg will obviously be benefitted with Kannur airport.
The major portion of international passengers are (75%) from Kerala. under such circumstances, the 3050 Meter runway with 95,000 sq feet and direct Kick off for 4000 Meter runway within commissioning kind of Kannur airport will be a great success and 60% of international passengers will shift to Kannur.
With about 100 kms. separating CCJ and KIA and 180 kms. separating IXE and KIA, it can be assured that KIA has a lot to gain unless both CCJ and IXE step up the ante.
If the airport becomes a reality in the coming months, it can be said with a fair degree of confidence that it stands to eat into a significant chunk of the traffic at both these international airports.
Without any efforts more then 50% International traffic from Mangalore will shift to KIAL !
International Traffic !!Yes both Calicut and Mangalore will be affected! As Kannur Airport was included in UDAN project in Domestic traffic definitely it will affect Mangalore as it will lose its passengers from North Kerala and Kodagu
